Cocaine Detoxification Treatment*
In the past, cocaine’s addictive characteristics were misunderstood. This is surprising because the problem with cocaine use is very simple: enough is never enough. Cocaine produces euphoria by flooding the brain with high amounts of particular neurotransmitters. Twenty minutes after use, the tide of neurotransmitters ebbs, and there is a strong craving for more cocaine. If the drug is smoked (crack or rock), the cravings come quicker. These cravings eventually affect behaviors and health. Individuals want more of the drug, regardless of negative consequences. Usually the drug ends up steering the individual away from their responsibilities and goals. Users begin concealing their drug use and feel guilty and afraid. They try to stop, but find they are unable to quit on their own.
Withdrawal symptoms include craving, fatigue, depression, anxiety, sleepiness, agitation or extreme suspicion. Other signs and symptoms individuals might experience while withdrawing from cocaine include:
- Anxiety and agitation
- Chest pain
- Itchy skin
- Irritability and restlessness
- Paranoia
- Hallucinations – visual, auditory or tactile
At Morningside, clients with co-occurring conditions get the help they need. Research has shown that relapse rates are dramatically reduced when co-occurring mood disorders are diagnosed and treated. All prescription drug use is monitored carefully in detox and also once a client enters Morningside's treatment programs.
After a few days of rest and nutritional support, most clients begin a schedule of educational lectures, group meetings and counseling with certified addiction specialists and licensed therapists. Many clients say the education and therapeutic support they received helped them feel “normal” again. Clients regain their health and self-esteem, and start mending personal relationships. One client described his experience: “I had financial problems, legal problems, and a cocaine problem. But I was so delusional that I didn’t really connect the dots. I thought I had it going on. I blamed my troubles on my wife, the economy, everything except me. Once I got to detox, things began to come together. My head didn’t clear up by snapping my fingers, but I began to see my part in things.”
*Detoxification services are not provided at Morningside Recovery facilities. We work closely with local, fully licensed detoxification centers that provide the highest level of care to our clients. If a client requires detoxification and is admitting to any of Morningside's programs, our clinical team will follow the client’s detoxification treatment at these local facilities. If the detoxification period is to exceed 72 hours, we will also begin private therapy and other treatment services at the designated location. Our consulting physician and psychiatrist will also follow each client’s case at this outside center in order to ensure a smooth transition into any of our many levels of care. Although outcome studies have shown significant increase in client success when receiving full or extended treatment services after detoxification, if you require only a detoxification without further treatment, we are happy to refer you to one of the highly regarded and trusted detoxification facilities that we utilize.
